Calgarians and local organizations are being honoured by The City of Calgary for their outstanding achievements and significant contributions to improving the quality of life in Calgary. Mayor Bronconnier and members of City Council recognized recipients of the 2006 Calgary Awards on June 13 at a ceremony in the Calgary Municipal Building.

The City has presented the Calgary Awards since 1994 to honour members of the community who have made significant contributions to improving the quality of life for other Calgarians. The Calgary Awards recognize deserving individuals, schools, corporations, community groups and organizations.

Chairperson’s Message –

Three Years ago in Fish Creek:

In the Summer of 2005, our valued park was subjected to historic flooding levels that were very upsetting at the time. However, in the ‘calm after the storm’ this has become an opportunity to rejuvenate the parks’ trail system. At this time the design work is in-progress with consideration being given to the higher usage levels, deferring traffic from sensitive areas and increasing user safety.

The flooding disrupted many of our planned members’ programs. Many initiatives were delayed or cancelled due to the parks closure or restrictions. Our ongoing programs, such as Park Watch, resumed operations later in the summer although the peak season was missed. A record number of volunteers turned out this past summer to help clean-up the Park after the flood. Many interesting items were found through-out the Park and we are hoping this volunteer spirit will continue with our May 7th, 2006 clean-up.

We introduced new educational programs for our members such as ‘Flowers in the Park’, ‘Beginner Nature Photography’ and a ‘Winter Birding Course’ which were very popular. We plan to offer more programs later this year– stay tuned for updates! We are also planning a new Park Care program that will be broader in scope than some of our previous programs. We will work closely with Provincial Park staff to sustain our park. Efforts will include an Invasive Weed Program – including our annual Purge the Spurge on June 17th, 2006 and trail reclamation work. Our Memorial Park Bench and Speaker Series programs are very successful and will continue in their current form.

I would like to recognize all of the Friends’ volunteers for their efforts over this past year of interesting change. Without the volunteers the Friends would not be able to pursue its mission ‘to protect, preserve and enhance the diverse natural and human history found in Fish Creek Provincial Park’.
On a personal note, I am honored to be part of this society. As a user and supporter of Fish Creek Provincial Park I was happy to join the board and am very pleased I have been able to make a contribution.
